A Ukrainian drone attack has reportedly struck a military facility in the Russian city of Izhevsk, resulting in three fatalities and 35 injuries, according to local officials. The strike occurred more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from the Ukrainian border, highlighting Kyiv's expanding long-range capabilities.
Udmurtia Governor Aleksandr Brechalov confirmed that 10 of those injured sustained serious wounds. He stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been informed of the incident.
The targeted facility, the Kupol Electromechanical Plant, is known for manufacturing advanced military equipment, including Tor and Osa surface-to-air missile systems, radar installations, and drones. Ukrainian media outlets suggest the plant plays a significant role in Russia’s defense production.
A source from Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) told BBC Ukraine that two long-range drones were used in the operation, launched from approximately 1,300 kilometers (over 800 miles) away. The official emphasized that such operations aim to degrade Russia’s military capabilities, disrupt weapons manufacturing, and send a clear message that no part of its defense infrastructure is beyond reach.
Footage circulating on social media—verified by the BBC—shows a large explosion on a building rooftop, followed by thick black smoke billowing above the industrial site.
Following the attack, Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, temporarily suspended flights at Izhevsk airport. The restrictions were lifted a few hours later.
This strike marks one of Ukraine's deepest penetrations into Russian territory using unmanned aerial vehicles, reflecting a continued escalation in the conflict and the strategic targeting of military infrastructure far from the front lines.
